DR. FLORIAN GLÖCKLHOFER

Florian is a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry at TU Wien and a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London. From 2018 to 2023, he held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (2018 to 2020), an Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship (2020 to 2022), and a Research Fellow position (2022 to 2023) at Imperial College London. His research in the field of π-conjugated organic compounds focuses on the design and synthesis of cyclic molecules known as π-conjugated macrocycles, which can be used for battery electrodes and organic electronics, and on the development of new synthetic approaches to aromatic organic compounds.

Florian studied Technical Chemistry at TU Wien in Vienna and received his PhD in 2017, having developed a new synthetic method for the preparation of cyanated aromatic compounds. After a year at TU Wien as a postdoctoral researcher developing thioalkyl-substituted polymers and post-polymerization modification methods, he started his Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship at Imperial College London in 2018.

Funding

  • New Horizons Grant, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), £ 201834  //  October 2020
    Applications for the EPSRC New Horizons call were assessed by a single key criterion: How exciting, high quality and potentially transformative is the research proposed? Florian's proposal to explore π-conjugated macrocycles for multielectron photoredox catalysis was successful in this highly competitive scheme. More details in our blog post and in the press release by Imperial College.

  • Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship, FWF Austrian Science Fund, € 162290  //  May 2020
    Florian was awarded a Schrödinger fellowship by the Austrian Science Fund to continue his work at Imperial College from September 2020.

  • Fellows and Clinicians Seed Fund grant, Imperial College London, £ 7750  //  December 2019
    The Fellows and Clinicians Seed Fund aims at enabling newly independent researchers to establish cross-College collaborations and investigate early stage research ideas. Florian was awarded one of the two College-wide grants in 2019/2020 together with Dr. Hyejeong Seong and Dr. Nicola Gasparini to investigate interfacing of organic photodiodes and stem cells for bias-free cell fate monitoring.

  • Fellows and Clinicians Seed Fund grant, Imperial College London, £ 3700  //  January 2019
    In 2018/2019, Florian was awarded one of the four College-wide grants together with Dr. Stefano Mezzavilla to investigate conjugated polymers as catalysts for the electrochemical conversion of CO2.

  • Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship, FWF Austrian Science Fund, € 166355  //  March 2018
    Florian was awarded this two-year postdoctoral fellowship by the Austrian Science Fund but had to turn it down in favour of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (see below).

  • Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, European Commission, € 183454  //  January 2018
    Being awarded this fellowship gave Florian the opportunity to move to Imperial College London in September 2018. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships aim at supporting the mobility of excellent experienced researchers and are awarded to only about 15% of applicants.

  • Research scholarship, TU Wien, € 6790  //  April 2014
    TU Wien awards research scholarships for short scientific projects. Florian received such a scholarship to carry out the initial work on a new reaction from quinones to cyanated aromatic compounds (published in Synlett 2015), which became the seminal work for his dissertation.

  • MSCA Fellow of the Week, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions  //  July 2020
    Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions name and promote Fellows of the Week. Fellows from all MSCA programmes (IF, ITN etc.) can be selected.

  • Promotion award for young scientists, Austrian state of Vorarlberg  //  November 2019
    The government of Vorarlberg honours outstanding young scientists from the region with this award of € 3000. Awardees can be selected from all fields of science.

  • 50 Köpfe von morgen, Vorarlberger Nachrichten (VN)  //  February 2019
    With this award, the western Austrian newspaper VN honours 50 outstanding young people from the region for their achievements each year. Awardees are selected from all professions.

  • Best teaching award: Best laboratory course (team award), Student council, TU Wien  //  June 2018
    The student council of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry at TU Wien honours outstanding lectures and courses by their pro didactica awards. Based on a student survey, the General Chemistry Introductory Laboratory was selected as best laboratory course.

  • Talent promotion award for science, Austrian state of Upper Austria  //  September 2017
    The government of Upper Austria recognizes outstanding achievements of excellent young scientists with this award of € 5400. Awardees can be selected from all fields of science.

  • Best poster award, ICSM 2016  //  June 2016

Service to the university

  • Imperial Postdocs and Fellows Enterprise Network (IPFEN) Committee Member, Imperial College London  //  Since March 2021
    IPFEN is a network run by a committee of early career researchers with support from Imperial Enterprise, the Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre, and an Advisory Board. The network aims to support early career researchers interested in exploring the commercial potential of ideas, discoveries, technologies, and innovations or in learning more about entrepreneurship and developing entrepreneurial skills.

  • Postdoc and Fellows Representative, Imperial College London  //  February 2019 to February 2020
    Tasks and activities in a team of three representatives in the Department of Chemistry: organisation of networking events for postdocs and fellows, regular meetings with the head of department and other key figures to discuss issues relevant to postdocs and fellows, meetings with representatives of other departments.
